About the event

The Lantern Walk commemorates Martinmas, as it is more commonly known in Europe, in honor of St. Martin, whose story reminds us all of our shared humanity.

The Lantern Walk is a simple, lovely, reverent event bringing to life for our children their role as a spark of light in the dark of night — a spark of light in the world.

Walking quietly and peacefully along the path, families carry their handmade lanterns, and singing traditional Lantern Walk songs that encourage us to be that warmth and light for ourselves and for others. Martinmas celebrates hope and kindness and being called to help others and be the good in the world.

The traditional story for Lantern Walk has been one of St. Martin who shared his cloak and lamp with a poor beggar on a cold evening. Feel free to read that story to your child before the lantern walk this week. You can find many versions of it online.

3:00 Freeplay at the park

4:00 Potluck

5:00 Lantern Walk

6:00 Goodbyes

**Please keep in mind before the walk there will be lots of time to play and chat during the potluck but during the Lantern walk the mood is quiet and reverent while we sing beautiful songs as we walk. We ask you keep this in mind and stay next to your children during this walk.

**Also please listen and learn 1 or 2 or all of the songs listed on this PDF (click here). It is lovely to spend this whole week listening and singing these songs with your children to prepare for the lantern walk.

**Please kindly RSVP here so we have a head count for the correct amount of food. Please bring your favorite dish to share and also bring own dishes, utensils, napkins and cups for all the food and drinks we will have. We aim to be zero-waste, so if you have metal dishes and cups that would be ideal. Thank you for supporting this!

**We ask that if you or your children are sick, that you stay home and take time to rest at home and heal. We want you to feel better and we want to keep the other families that do attend healthy. We will look forward to seeing you at the next meet up when everybody is healthy again. Thank you for understanding.**

**We aim to be a screen-free event for the children. Thank you for supporting this goal.**
