Any and all information around filing a PSA is welcomed! I am curious your experience doing so plus pro/cons you have come across. Thanks for your insight 🙏🏽💜
Kinder is not a required grade level in CA so only register her when she is considered 1st grade level eligible. Don't rush it or worry about it. Filing takes 8-10 minutes and all done online. You name your school, submit students names, teachers names and principal as well. I kept it all under my name. We used an outside mail box, not our home address as the "school". We use a UPS store and pay yearly for a mail box there. The dates to file is October 1st-15th every year....you'll need to refile every year!

Hi Sara,Last October was the first time I filed a PSA. Curious why you used an outside mailbox as your “school” address?
This will be our third year filing but I've always used my home address so can you share more why you use an outside mailbox? Thank you!

Filing a PSA was the right choice for us. I desire for my son to learn through hands on application and not what the state dictates. We briefly explored enrolling in a charter. The state every year complicates and increases its expectations (I believe intentionally) and in return has made it challenging for the charters/ families. It’s the familiar paradigm of a power structure holding the keys that allow access to the gate. After Covid, I’m over it! I’m not a good acrobat and can’t clear the hoops anymore, lol. 😉I also didn’t love that the charter has to report my “unvaccinated” son to the state. I do understand that the educational funds the charters offer are highly valuable and understand why families choose it. Enjoy the adventure! Find what feels right for you.❤️

Can a child being taught by a parent at home be exempt from the compulsory education laws?Yes. If the Private School Affidavit is properly filed, and the school meets the criteria for a full-time private school, a local school district can allow an exemption. EC Section 48200 requires all children between ages 6 and 18 to attend public, full-time day school, and requires the parent or guardian to send the child unless the child is exempt. Public school officials have an obligation to ascertain whether a child not in public school is truant or being privately educated in accordance with an exemption from the compulsory education law. EC Section 48222 says that children may be exempt from compulsory public education if they are attending a private full-time day school. EC Section 33190 requires such schools to file the Private School Affidavit annually with CDE. For families schooling at home, filing the Affidavit is a required first step toward an exemption from compulsory school attendance. The exemption has two parts: first, parents or guardians schooling their student(s) at home must file the Private School Affidavit, thereby registering the intent to educate their student(s) privately. Second, the public school district listed in the Affidavit makes a determination of whether a home-schooled child has met statutory requirements and therefore is exempt from public school attendance.
